Binding Extensional Viscosity

Test ID

R-017

Description

This test follows a scheme for the analytical evaluation of the extensional viscosity from capillary rheology data obtained using an orifice die. The scheme is based on Binding's attempt to provide a mathematically rigorous solution to Cogswell's method for determining extensional viscosity (DM Binding, J. Non-Newt Fl. Mech, 27 (1988), 173-189). Orifice data are taken over a range of shear rates. The data are transformed to extensional viscosity.

Options

Standards

  • ASTM D3835

Data

Shear Viscosity v. Shear Rate. This data appears in Matereality as Capillary Viscosity.

Samples

0.5 kg of pellets [details]

Application

Extensional flows occur in many polymer processing applications. Such flows can play an important role in extrusion and blow-molding processes. In injection-molding, flow through runners and gates may be dominated by extensional effects where large contractions are present.
