First Normal Stress Difference by DMA (1 Temperature)

Test ID

R-023

Description

A dynamic mechanical analyzer is used. A test specimen in the form of a circular disk is sandwiched between the cone and plate of the apparatus, at temperature. The cone is rotated with respect to the plate at a constant shear rate and the torque transmitted through the specimen and the normal force is measured. This is used to calculate the viscosity, first normal stress difference.

Options

Samples in powder, fluid or pellet forms can also be used. Tests can be performed at more temperatures for additional cost.

Standards

  • ASTM D4440
  • ISO 6721-10

Data

First Normal Stress Difference v. Shear Rate, Shear Viscosity v. Shear Rate, Strain Sweep. This data appears in Matereality as Melt Rheology by DMA.

Application

These properties are fundamental viscometric measures of polymers and can be used in the development of visco-elastic models for applications including extrusion and blow molding simulation.
